For anyone who commits to floating the Bow River for one or
several days, it becomes also a place to observe wildlife, particularly bird
life. Several bird watching groups tour the Bow River in hopes of seeing Bald
and Golden eagles; falcons; hawks, pelicans; herons; geese; ducks; and a vast
assortment of song birds along the shrubby shorelines. Evenings are sure to
bring out swarms of songbirds as they dip and dive for the evening hatches.
Whitetail and mule deer begin to show as the day's heat fades to a warm breeze,
their footprints almost always seen at every river pullout on the rivers' runs.
It is said that deer bless the landing spots of a trophy fish on the Bow, as
fishermen are hard pressed to not see deer tracks in the sands of the Bow's
shoreline.

It is unusual to think a river can be given an "award".
An award is nothing more than our human need to glorify something. The Bow River
and Bow River fly fishing is deserving of an award as it is set apart and unique from all the
other streams and rivers in Alberta, Canada, perhaps even North America. Fly fishermen worldwide know of the Bow
River and its popularity among fly fishers is unsurpassed anywhere else in Canada.
The Bow River is a fly fisher's dream with its world
class Rainbow and Brown Trout fishery. Generally the shoreline is easily waded
and the river is an excellent stream to fly fish
from a drift boat. The Bow provides endless angling opportunities resulting from
the numerous islands, riffles, runs and flats forming back eddies where large
trout hold in good numbers. The day spent drifting along this famous reach downstream of Calgary has become Canada's fly fishing symbol, one that many
people have come to experience, one that will continue to be cherished for
decades to come.
